“Rose Study” focuses on the presence of a single bloom rendered through sculptural impasto. The composition is intentionally direct, allowing the rose to occupy the full visual field and hold attention through texture, color, and scale.

The petals are built through layered palette knife strokes that create raised surfaces and directional movement across the painting. Rather than relying on smooth blending, the work develops depth through physical paint, allowing light to shift subtly across each ridge and edge.

Set against a restrained background, the bloom is given room to feel both expansive and contained. The composition balances softness in the petals with structural clarity in the overall form, creating a work that feels intimate at close range and commanding from a distance.

Artist Note

This painting began with an interest in giving a single rose enough space to fully unfold.

Rather than building outward into a larger arrangement, I focused on one bloom and allowed the form to expand through layered palette knife strokes. The thickness of the paint became essential to the piece, creating both structure and softness through the material itself.

Throughout the process, I was interested in preserving a sense of openness while maintaining control in the composition. Each petal was developed gradually, allowing the surface to carry light, movement, and weight at the same time.

The final piece reflects that balance between intimacy and presence — a close study of a single flower expressed through physical paint.
